Leon
is a splendid place that offers
its visitors a variety of activities,
such as a tranquil stroll through
its streets full of colonial, religious,
and contemporary buildings. Remember
the stories and legends that the
inhabitants of this beautiful land
narrate. They risk being forgotten
due to the commercial and industrial
growth that Leon has experienced
while becoming the main producer
of footwear, clothes, and leather
articles in Mexico.
Due to the foregoing reason and
its excellent infrastructure, Leon
has become an important commercial
and business hub that attracts businessmen
seeking to carry out meetings, congresses,
and seminars, as well as visitors
looking to enrich their cultural
knowledge or even just to spend
a unique vacation.
In
late January and early February,
Leon proudly commemorates the anniversary
of its founding. Inhabitants join
with local and state authorities
to hold a great fair where participants
organize a whole host of sports
and cultural activities. Important
among them are the majestic parade
along the city streets, and the half-marathon called "Race
of the Neighborhoods." In
addition, folklore and music are
also part of this celebration, with
the famous "palenques" (concerts
carried out in a cockfight ring)
where citizens and visitors can
delight in concerts offered by world-famous
singers and bands.
Another
peculiar festivity appreciated by
people in Leon is the Flower War,
celebrated on September 16th. The
inhabitants meet in the Main Square
and Founders Garden on this date,
to interchange seasonal flowers,
although the real essence comes
when the person who has received
the colorful gift gives a kiss to
the one who made the present as
a sign of gratitude.
